Transitions: Night 1: Soundscapes under the stars

Date:
Thu, 09/27/2012 - 8:00pm - 9:30pm
Event Type:
Concert
CCRMA celebrates the start of the 2012 season with Transitions, two evenings of outdoor, under-the-stars concerts showcasing music from the CCRMA community and beyond.

Thursday night's concert is a curated program will feature multichannel pieces using the full potential of our 24 channel immersive outdoors surround sound system. Music and performances by Jonathan Abel / Bissera Pentcheva, Chris Chafe, Jonathan Berger, Fernando Lopez-Lezcano, Ake Parmerud, Bill Schottstaedt and John Kocolas / Konstantine Salmas.

CCRMA' backyard will open at 7pm, so bring some warm clothes and a picnic, lay out your blankets, and start the new academic year with 24+ channels of music surrounding you!

This year's program includes:

Jonathan Abel / Bissera Pentcheva (& others) and John Kocolas / Konstantine Salmas will transport us yet again to Hagia Sophia, this time with two live singers. CCRMA's backyard teleported to Istambul through a full 3D soundfield.

Chris Chafe, Inside Out (2012) multichannel piece.

Jonathan Berger, Stude (2012), for full 3D soundfield, a four part mensurational canon with voices distinguished by timbre rather than melodic interval.

Fernando Lopez-Lezcano, Knock Knock... anybody there? (1994-2012) re-rendered in floating point for full 3D soundfield diffusion

Ake Parmerud, Grooves (2011), 43 channels, where crackles, pops and surface noise from vinyl records create a sound universe around you.

And from Bill Schottstaedt, three great pieces: movements 3 and 5 from Colony (1982), and Dinosaur Music (1984), all freshly rendered in floating point and using (for the first time ever) a full 3D soundfield.
