TORSEN LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL (LSD)

It's a prevalent fact that the Torsen LSD is the cream of the crop among differentials.  Here's some info about the Torsen unit that I've gathered, (thanks to Ian Frechette and Randy Stocker).

A limited slip differential is basically a compromise.  In certain instances, you'd like to have a full locking diff of extreme traction imbalance, but otherwise would prefer operation closer to an open diff, so that the tires can turn at different speeds around corners.  The limited slip differential does a little bit of both.  It's basically an open diff until about 2/3's the way through the corner, then it locks the outside wheel to about 40-45%.  This action helps prevent a push in super tight corners.

However, one downside of the LSD is that if one wheel is completely off the ground (zero traction) then the characteristics of the Torsen will make it basically an open diff.  Hence, both wheels must at least have some traction for the unit to function properly.

The Torsen has also superior torque ratings, and its longevity is superior to the Viscous LSD — the Torsen will practically never wear out.
