SONGO BE'ND SÓNGORO COSONGO by Nicolás Guillén
...Songo Be'nd has been founded five years ago by Marco Trevisani...

...it take its cue from this Cuban poet's attempt to incorporate polyrhythmic elements not found in Western music into our own musical style...

...during the last five years i have been developping a complex system of interleaving piano and computer sounds in a way that masks the seeming disunity of the two sources....

....the piano is modified by introducing foreign articles into the piano's strings and soundboard as well as through digital processing......

...the rhythm becomes the dominant element. The piano is prepared in a way where its harmonic characteristics become hidden and its rhythmical aspects are taken into a predominant relevance....

Even if i write, for all compositions, the main structure and the sound libraries, the final interpretation of the piece is always the result of a very intense collaboration with the musicians involved in every different session...
The name Songo Be'nd is derived from Nicolas Guillen's stanza:

``...
Sóngoro, cosongo,
songo be:
sóngoro, cosongo
de mamey;
sóngoro, la negra
baila bien;
sóngoro de uno
sóngoro de tré.
...''

(Motivos de Son 1930, Cuba)
