Data-Driven Research in Music Cognition

CCRMA, Stanford University

Homework 7

Written deliverables due by 9am, Friday March 3.

Part A: Draft I

Prepare a first draft of your paper. As you have completed your literature review, you should be able to fill in much of the background. You may also be ready to fill in your methods (dataset, data cleaning, and proposed or in-progress analysis) and report preliminary results.

  • Paper templates: Use the templates in Canvas/Files/Paper templates (LaTeX or Word).
  • Introduction: Based on the content of your previous presentation and annotated bibliography, you should be able to fill in much of the introduction. Include here only the background literature needed to orient the reader (more coverage of past research will take place in the Discussion as you contextualize your findings). Include a general introduction of your topic; how past researchers have approached it; the state of the art; and the still-open question that you will address. End the section with a description of what you will be doing in the paper (this can be revised later).
  • Methods: Consider including subsections for Dataset, Analysis, Visualization, and Evaluation as appropriate. By now you should be able to describe your dataset; what is has been used for in the past (if at all); how you got it; its format; and what software you are using to analyze it. You should also now be able to describe to some extent how you are cleaning and analyzing the data.
  • Results: You are not required to have results at this point, but feel free to add placeholders if you know the general subsections under which your results will be organized.
  • Discussion: For now, just include a paragraph noting any confounds or limitations of your chosen dataset and/or analysis approach.
  • Bibliography: You may begin filling in the bibliography, or for now just use placeholders in the text.

Part B: Prepare analysis and preliminary results presentation

You will each have 8 minutes (followed by Q&A) to present your analysis approach and preliminary results. Consider the following points when preparing your slides:

  • (1 slide) Summarize the topic, brief statements on how it's been approached in the past, and the open question your research will address.
  • (1-2 slides) Describe your dataset. Where did it come from? Has it been used in past research? How did you get it? What kinds of cleaning, aggregation, or other preprocessing have you had to perform to get it into a usable state?
  • (1-2 slides) Describe the analyses you are performing (or will perform). What software are you using? List your main research questions and how you are going about answering them. If applicable, describe how you might evaluate your results.
  • (1-2 slides) Present preliminary results if you have them.
  • (1 slide) Discuss any limitations or potential confounds of your dataset and/or analysis approach.

Deliverables

Submit your preliminary draft (Part A) to Canvas by 9am, Friday March 3. You do not need to submit your slides (Part B) to Canvas.
