Miriam A. Kolar, M.F.A. & Ph.D., is Adjunct Professor at Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) and a Visiting Scholar atAmherst College. A recent Weatherhead Fellow at the School for Advanced Research (SAR) anthropology center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Dr. Kolar studies human-sonic interrelationships across time and geography, integrating acoustics and auditory science in prehistoric archaeology. Since 2008, Dr. Kolar has led archaeoacoustics and music archaeology research at the 3,000-year-old UNESCO World Heritage Centre Chavín de Huántar, Peru, with a second Andean project on sonic communication in Inca contexts initiated through fieldwork at the Inca administrative city, Huánuco Pampa. Dr. Kolar coordinates Paleoacoustics research in a project directed by archaeologist Dr. Carole Fritz to explore sonic communication in Upper Paleolithic decorated caves, in collaboration with a team of acoustics researchers organized by composer and spatial audio pioneer John Chowning.
