Memoryless Nonlinearities

Memoryless or instantaneous nonlinearities are the simplest and most commonly implemented form of nonlinear element:

$\displaystyle y(n) = f(x(n))
$

excluding the special case $ f(x)=\alpha x$ which defines a simple linear gain of $ \alpha$ .
