Shu Yu is a composer, pianist and flutist. She holds a Master's degree in Music, Science and Technology from Stanford University in CA, USA and a Bachelor’s degree in Theory Composition from National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan. At Stanford, she studied with Giancarlo Aquilanti and she have been studying with Brian Ferneyhough. In Taiwan, her composition advisor was Wen Ta Juang.

In 2015, she received Field Research Travel Grant from the Center for Latin American Studies at Stanford University for the project “Field Recording, Composition and Performance for Ecology Conservation in Patagonia, Chile”. In February 2012, her piano piece “Footprints of Dream” was selected by “Sound Exchange” Shanghai Conservatory of Music and National Taiwan Normal University teachers’ and students’ piano composition forum and performance. Shu Yu is additionally interested in exploring the music of ethnic groups in addition to her Han Chinese ethnicity; thus, she composed the piece “Sarumaenan ta” (We are Family) and won the third prize for the 4th Taiwanese Aboriginal Choral Festival “Senasena-I” in 2012. In 2010, Shu Yu won the second prize of the Irvine Chinese Chorus competition with the piece “Lonely Goose” for SATB and piano.

While in Taiwan, Shu Yu participated in the National Taiwan Normal University Symphonic Band as a flutist. The band leader of the NTNU Band is Shu Han Yeh, who inspired Shu Yu to cultivate works written for wind, brass and symphonic band and roused her interest in conducting. She performed with the NTNU band at Taiwan National Concert Hall in May 2011; Shaanxi Normal University in Xi’an, China; Japan and many other places in Taiwan whether indoor or outdoor, engaging communities worldwide.

During the summers of 2011 and 2012, Shu Yu taught at the Belize School of Music summer camp. Shu Yu’s classes include piano (beginners and intermediate), flute (beginners), vocal ensemble (children), musicianship, music theory and creative composition. Besides teaching, Shu Yu was assigned to arrange various Belizean folk songs and songs by composer Errollynn Wallen, a Belizean-born British composer, into various media.
