Music 220c Spring 2014- Composition Project
Somewhere In Between- for Brass Quintet and Electronics
Program Note
This piece is mainly derived from the fondness of brass quintet, Chinese culture and interest in implementing electronics in my composition. Five elements, in Chinese, Wu Xing, means five processes or five phases where xing means process and change. Wood, fire, earth, metal and water are the five elements or five phases that traditional Chineses fields used to explain phenomenon such as cosmic cycle. For the electronics, I decided to treat each speaker as individual instruments and design timbre for each. I thought it would be interesting to see if brass quintet with electronics timbres can convey the idea of process and change in Wu Xing.
