Chapter 7: Social Design

I would like to respond to Pinciple 7.7: A Little Anonymity Can Go a Long Way. as an extension of the discussion on games last week. The sense of anonymity builds connection they could not exist and would be broke down in real life. In a game commmunity, we are free to join and leave, be friendly or toxic without worrying too much about consequences (with boundaries in mind). When we consider fighting each other is bad, we ignore the fact that fighting is just another way of doing things together that builds relationship. And nothing more than fighting makes both sides expose their weaknesses. The same concept extends to the world of Internet. It hurts us, but it also makes us closer and stronger. Thus, I could very much resonate with the leaf trombone app thet Ge made. He did the 'judging' part of the app with Pinciple 7.10:Put HUMANS in the LOOP! in mind, but I would also like to address the essentiality of putting competition in the loop. When we realize competition is happening between the musical materials we create, the urge to be better comes along with pressure. And that (when controlled at a correct level) would stimulate more sparkling pieces than casual 'drawings' and 'playing around's.
