Selected block size controls amplitude and frequency resolution.
Frequency resolution
- To resolve physical partials block size has to be larger than
, is frequency distance
between partials.
- Smaller block sizes results in solutions based on
irregular amplitude and frequency modulation.
Amplitude resolution
- Amplitude slope has to be nearly constant
within block size.
- Larger block sizes result in
additional partials.
Matching of physical situation depends critically on block size!
Problem:
- Frequency and amplitude resolution are coupled via block size.
- Impulse driven systems (example: drum) requires high frequency
resolution (long blocks) and short amplitude segments.
