This HIT is part of a research study on ways to combine sound and music in virtual environments. When watching movies and playing video games we often see actors and characters moving in certain ways with music and sound playing at the same time. Sometimes the music and sound are synchronized to the images so that we see them as fitting together. Some common examples of this are the sounds of punches and kicks during fighting scenes in classic Kung-Fu movies, or the playing of an orchestra as we watch the conductor swing his or her baton.
In this study, you will be shown a series of short video clips with sound and music playing at the same time. After watching each clip you will be asked to rate how well the images and the sound and music fit together. You will also be asked to give some background survey information about your experiences with music in the past, for example, “have you ever studied music?”. Your answers and the survey questions will be used for publication and scientific meetings. At no time will any identifying personal information be stored, published, or shared.
- Please wear headphones. Sound is a very important part of this task so please wear headphones and make sure the volume on your computer is turned on and up. If you don't have headphones please make sure your speakers are turned on and up.
- Test your audio. Click the "Play" button on the audio test player below to hear a short sound example and adjust your computer's volume to a comfortable level. Make sure you can clearly hear the sound being played and that it isn't loud enough to hurt your ears.
- Below you'll find a short video clip. There are two control buttons that will let you Rewind and Play/Pause the video. Please watch the video as many times as necessary to answer the questions that follow.
- You will be asked a series of questions below about the video example. Please answer all questions before submitting this HIT.
- In addition, you will be asked a few questions about your musical background and your own experience with virtual environments and video games. Please answer all questions to the best of your ability before submitting this HIT.
