Technology should be more than merely functional – it should enhance one’s sensory and emotional experiences. In Chapter 8 of Artful Design, I thought that Principle 8.6: “There has to be an aesthetic dimension that underlies our shaping of technology,” advocates for integrating aesthetic considerations into the design process to make technology more intuitive, engaging, and emotionally resonant. This principle is exemplified through various instances where technology transcends its practical utility to become a part of human expression and connection. For example, modern user interfaces, such as those found in smartphones and apps, demonstrate how visual and interactive design elements can significantly affect usability and user satisfaction. The clean, responsive interfaces of popular apps enhance user interaction not merely through functionality but by creating a seamless, aesthetically pleasing user experience and inviting engagement that lasts for a longer period of time.

I think we can approach this principle from many different aspects. An example it extends to could be shown in public installations where technology interacts with art to create immersive experiences. Installations like the Rain Room (2012) at MoMA offer interactive experiences that combine material, structural, and interactive aesthetics to engage the participant’s senses, allowing visitors to experience walking through rain without getting wet, which is achieved through using motion sensors (https://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/1352). This shows how combining arts and technology can turn simple concepts into something that creates a responsive relationship. In addition, video games also reflect this principle by offering sophisticated narratives and visual effects that draw players into the game’s universe. Games like Journey and Monument Valley leverage stunning artistic visuals and soundtracks to create an emotionally engaging atmosphere. They show how the aesthetic quality of games can elevate the gaming experience to an art form.

As designers, the process of creation challenges one to rethink the role of aesthetics in technology. The product should speak to something satisfying and meaningful, feeling like extensions for senses and emotions in the experiences and interactions. Designing from both needs and values ensures that our technological creations are not only functional but also resonate with users on a deeper, more personal level. Throughout the various chapters of Artful Design, this thematic integration of aesthetics in technology is emphasized as a core principle that transforms functional systems into meaningful human experiences; and finally, advocating for the idea that technology should be a seamless extension of our physical and emotional selves.
