Beach Boys: SMiLE '67 (Rego's stereo mixes) =========================================== This is to accompany my two stereo mixes of SMiLE '67: 1. The "Capitol" mix, based on the tracklist printed on the Capitol sleeves. What might have resulted if it was released in early '67. 2. The "Wilson" mix, outlining Brian Wilson's final intentions as a composer (based on his 2004 re-recording). I tried to match everything note for note, though a few transitional instrumental parts have no matching '67 material. Below is a tracklisting of my mixes. Each track is listed with the source of the mix (in parentheses), along with any of my modifications / justifications. The sources marked as "Mix W/X/Y/Z" came unlabelled via soulseek, and I'd be happy if someone could verify where those mixes are from! SMiLE 1967: CAPITOL MIX ----------------------- SIDE A 1. PRAYER (20/20) Not on the submitted tracklist, but clearly marked by Brian as an intro track. Shortened the fadeout a little. 2. HEROES AND VILLAINS (Mix X + Shangai Joe) Re-sequenced Shangai Joe's mix to abide by structure of "H&V Part 1" found in common bootlegs- used Mix X for sections not found in Shangai Joe's mix. Layered the two for 'In the Cantina' section (see justification in BW-2004 section). 3. DO YOU LIKE WORMS? (Mix X + Anne Wallace) Mixed the 'bum, ba-dada' vocal accompaniments from the Anne Wallace mix into the 2nd half of each verse. Also, the Bicycle Rider theme appears twice to correspond to the "Ribbon of Concrete / Bicycle Rider" duo in the 2004 version. I cut out the repeated ending. 4. WONDERFUL (Mix X) Faded out last section. The fact that the last chorus had been repeated and sloppily cut off indicates that a fadeout was planned. 5. CHILD IS FATHER OF THE MAN (Shangai Joe + Mix X + SOT) Re-sequenced material to abide by structure outlined by common bootlegs (such as vigitone). Did some layering of instrumental part toward the end. 6. THE OLD MASTER PAINTER (Mix X + Mok) The best stereo mix I have of this has a panning glitch like the one in Good Vibrations. Fixed it by using Mok's mix in that area. 7. CABIN ESSENCE (Mix X) SIDE B 1. GOOD VIBRATIONS (Mix W) (new for version 1.2: using Mix W) 2. WIND CHIMES (Mix X) 3. I'M IN GREAT SHAPE (Mok + Shangai Joe) The fact that the "Workshop" material is the same as the Earth part of "The Elements" indicates that they weren't intended to coexist, so I cut out the "I Wanna Be Around / Workshop" parts from this track. This also makes sense because IIGS serves as a proper prelude to "Vega-Tables" in theme. Also, I it panned out more and brought down the levels of the loud piercing ending. 4. VEGA-TABLES (Mix X) I blended the transitions into eachother to keep the beat going. The Smiley Smile and 2004 versions agree with this practice. (new for version 1.3x: adjusted pitch of different sections to match each other) 5. THE ELEMENTS (Mix X + Smiley Smile) I blended the transitions into eachother in the same way as "Vega-Tables". Mixed in "Fall Breaks...Winter" just like 2004 re-recording. 6. SURF'S UP (Mix X) 7. YOU'RE WELCOME (HIDDEN TRACK) (Capitol + vigitone?) In the same way that Pet Sounds ends with a hidden track of dogs and trains, the Capitol release of Smile may have ended with "You're Welcome" as a hidden track, not marked on the label. I made the fake stereo effect out of two mono mixes. SMiLE 1967: BASED ON BW-2004 ----------------------------- 1. OUR PRAYER (20/20) Shortened the fadeout. 2. GEE / HEROES AND VILLAINS (Mix X + Shangai Joe + vigitone? + Andrew McHugh) I blended the transitions for "Gee" and elsewhere, and imitated 2004's cheesy stereo-expansion intro. Cut the 5 'woo-woo's into 4 like in the 2004 re-recording. Re-mixed 'In the Cantina' section to make the laughs softer and made 'you're under arrest!' less menacing. (new for version 1.40: Added stereo "Gee" and ending sections from Andrew McHugh.) 3. DO YOU LIKE WORMS? (ROLL PLYMOUTH ROCK) (Mix X + Anne Wallace) Mixed the 'bum, ba-dada' vocal accompaniments from the Anne Wallace mix into the 2nd half of each verse. Also, the Bicycle Rider theme appears twice to correspond to the 'Ribbon of Concrete / Bicycle Rider' duo in the 2004 version. I cut out the repeated ending and mixed in the 4 'woo-woo's. 4. BARNYARD (SOT + Endless Harmony) Re-sequenced to match verse/chorus structure of BW2004. Softened it up a little and spread out the panning. Incorporated vocals from Endless Harmony. 5. OLD MASTER PAINTER / YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE (Mix X + Mok) Blended reverb from last note of Barnyard into start of this song. Fixed panning glitch like in Capitol mix. 6. CABIN ESSENCE (Mix X) 7. WONDERFUL (Mix X) Cut the ending to line up with next track. 8. LOOK (SONG FOR CHILDREN) (SOT + Mix Y) Lined up SOT mix of "Look" with ending of "Wonderful". (New for version 1.1: Blended in parts of Mix Y to soften down initial horn stab and drums in chorus. Transposed, added and panned vocals from SOT mix of "Child is Father..." to choruses, thus matching "child is father" chant from BW2004 version of "Song For Children".) 9. CHILD IS FATHER OF THE MAN (Mix X) Cut beginning and ending to correspond to structure/length of re-recorded version. The 2004 version's ending has no corresponding '67 material as far as I know, but note how nicely the ending bassline here segues into "Surf's Up". 10. SURF'S UP (Mix X) 11. I'M IN GREAT SHAPE / I WANNA BE AROUND / WORKSHOP (Mok + Shangai Joe) I panned it out more and brought down the levels of the loud piercing ending of IIGS. (new for version 1.3x: adjusted pitch of vega-tables piano to match next track) 12. VEGA-TABLES (Mix X + Hawthorne) I blended the transitions into eachother to keep the beat going like in the 2004 versions. Added the slow section at the end from Smiley Smile version, which I EQed and panned out a little to make it sound more like the SMiLE sessions. (new for version 1.3x: adjusted pitch of different sections to match each other) 13. ON A HOLIDAY (Mix Z + Andrew McHugh) (new for version 1.40: Mixed in ending from Andrew McHugh's stereo smiley mix of Wind Chimes.) 14. WIND CHIMES (Mix X + SOT + Andrew McHugh) Added intro, outro, and repeated chorus to match 2004 structure. (new for version 1.40: tail of Andrew McHugh's Wind Chimes smiley mix) 15. MRS. O'LEARY'S COW (FIRE) (SOT + Smiley Smile) Mixed in "Fall Breaks...Winter" just like 2004 re-recording. 16. I LOVE TO SAY DA-DA (IN BLUE HAWAII) (SOT + Andrew McHugh) (new for version 1.40: Mixed in parts of Andrew McHugh's stereo mixes of In Blue Hawaii section) 16A. OUR PRAYER (REPRISE) (20/20) Corresponds to ending from BW2004's track of "In Blue Hawaii". 17. GOOD VIBRATIONS (Mix W + Jon Hunt + box set bonus disc) (new for version 1.2: using Mix W) Incorporated "hom be dow" section to follow 2004 structure.
