Music 220B HW 4

Milestone 1.5

For my Shepard tone statement, I have decided to Shepard-ize Giovanni Battista Benedetti's "comma pump", a short looped contrapuntal sequence that, when played in just intonation, does not return to its original pitch, and instead endlessly rises by a syntonic comma every repetition. I had this progression played by Shepard tones, geometrically increasing both tempo and volume, until the beat reaches a tempo of 1 sample, at which point the loop "achieves takeoff" and flies away defiantly, much like the problem of "perfect intonation" seemed to do from the grasp of Benedetti and everyone else in the world who has tackled this same problem.
