Program Notes: |
Observing the destructive periodic wars over history and the current interglobal conflicts in the 21st century, I searched for an appropriate poem to stimulate this composition. I discovered this poem by John Scott of Amwell, Scotland. Even though it was written in a time of war over two centuries ago, it has not lost any of its poignancy. The sentiment of fear and loss expressed in the poem is still palpable in today’s uneasy society and is also mirrored in the churning present-day political rhetoric. The constant sound of the discordant drums’ call throughout the piece reflects the underlying threat that at any time and without warning the call might be answered. |
