Music 220C Project — Concerto for Electric Guitar

Statement of Purpose

I am working on a concerto for electric guitar and chamber orchestra. To facilitate work towards this end, I intend to build a set of digital filters and notation techniques that make the piece fully portable and reproducible in different environments.

Technical Information

All filters are designed and implemented using Faust, as is the user interface. Formulas are derived from those in DAFX: Digital Audio Effects. Ed. Udo Zölzer.

Progress Update

I finished orchestrating around the first theme and distortion variation for the first movement. It's embedded in the Compositional Themes page.

I finished the guitar part for the first theme and distortion variation (depicted in the MATLAB graph output) for the first movement. It's embedded in the Compositional Themes page.

In addition, I have finished the orchestration for the first non-distorted portion and part of the distorted portion of the same section, excluding some dynamic markings in the strings. That score is accessible via link from the Compositional Themes page.

I have written the theme for the first movement! It's derived from the diatonic hexachord (G-A-B-C-D-E, or Forte class 6-32), and was then warped using a symbolic distortion filter implemented in MATLAB. There is a graph depicting the input and output of that process in the Compositional Themes page.

My current project is orchestrating the movement. Once that is finished, I will post excerpts from the score.
