Homework 1: Steam

The rest of Chapter 4 of Artful Design inspired thought about what "computer music" really is (and what producing isn't). Paul Lansky provides amazing inspiration for the work presented here, and this response contains some discussion of Table's Clear and Night Traffic, both on Lansky's Homebrew.
The human ear can distinguish between the sounds of hot and cold water being poured, and this idea of hot water having a distinctive sound inspired this water-based piece. When filtered, many of the sounds I chose took on a fiery quality, and thus this piece explores the interplay between watery sounds and fiery sounds. All sounds (except the very last one) were generated using faucet noises, whether that be the handle, drip, or gurgle so familiar to our everyday lives. Subtractive synthesis and other effects were done in ChucK, with intermediate and late-stage processing done in Audacity. Enjoy!
