Welcome to "Aspects of South American Musical Culture," a sampling of specific tidbits of musical cultures of Chile and Argentina. Aspects to be covered are:

  • From Chile: traditional/folklore music, indigenous music/instruments, modern popular music of the '90s.
  • From Argentina: the electroacoustic music community of Buenos Aires.

The motif for this presentation was realized during my stay in Latin America at the Stanford Overseas Program in Chile last Quarter (Winter '96-'97). There, thanks to a URO major grant, I researched native instruments and musics of Chile and Argentina. My studies and travels took me all over central and southern Chile and to the Laboratorio de Investigación y Producción Musical (LIPM) in Buenos Aires.

Read through a research paper on "Musical Fusions in Chilean Musical Cultures"-a good introduction to the site. Listen and look at various rhythms from Cueca music (music that accompanies the Chilean national dance.
Listen to and examine various instruments that I acquired in Chile. Get to know LIPM, the Laboratorio de Investigación y Producción Musical (LIPM) in Buenos Aires.
