FestyVocal, founded by members of a choir in Firminy with over 100 years of history, is a non-profit organization with the goal of promoting culture through various workshops, meetings, discussions, debates, readings, conferences, and vocal expression, as well as supporting creation. The organization of the biennial event for contemporary vocal music takes place at Église Le Corbusier (Firminy, FR), which is classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. About twenty permanent volunteers work towards creating a friendly atmosphere and a team spirit that is highly appreciated by artists and festival-goers. FestyVocal has received support from institutional partners, including the City of Firminy, the Department of the Loire, Saint-Etienne Métropole, the AURA Region, SACEM, and, since 2018, the Department of the Haute-Loire and the Ministry of Culture (DRAC) at all political levels since its inception in 2015. Coposition Program Note

I have composed this vocal piece for the upcoming 4th International Biennial of Contemporary Vocal Music organized by Festyvocal (Le Corbusier Church, Firminy, November 2023). This transitional adaptation to our Stage at CCRMA, lasting around 3 minutes, draws from my previous experience with Festyvocal, where I conducted an in-depth study on the unique acoustics of the Church in 2020. The central theme of the biennial, "Equinoxes," was very inspirational for me; ancient rituals of equinoxes have significantly shaped human identity over 3000 years ago in Europe (at Stonehenge as an example). Therefore, the piece examines the contrasting forces between the earth’s ineluctable orbital movement, and the fragility of human identity. To capture the essence of this exploration, I found inspiration in the poems of Andrée Chedid, particularly "Des soleils encore verts" and "L'axe.”, presented in two distinct parts respectively supported by a piano and spatialized computer music. With the invaluable support of Festyvocal, I eagerly anticipate presenting this work in collaboration with the festival choir, making full use of the extraordinary acoustics offered by the Le Corbusier Church.
