Objective:
    To determine what makes one musical tone sound timbrally different from another.
 

Procedure:

• Record single, sustained tones produced by variety of instruments.
• Ask musicians to identify timbres using the Timbre Scale .
• Look at sonograms of tones that majority of listeners identify with certain timbres (e.g., violin earns a score of 6 on "Warmth" scale by 72% of listeners).
• Determine which aspects of the tone (frequency, etc.), as represented in the sonogram, influence listener's percept of timbre.
• Synthesize tones that match timbres of the recorded instruments. Ask same listeners to determine which timbre they perceive.
