Acceptance

After the cycle, electro-acoustic music was better accepted and supported among the academic circles of music departments at the National University of Colombia, and at the University of Los Andes. For the first time electro-acoustic music history and compositional techniques were added to the curriculums of both universities. Also at that moment, The Colombian Electro-acoustic Composers Association was formed with members in the country and Colombians abroad. On the first half of 1994, The first Electro-acoustic music competition takes place. The entries included works of students from few universities from around the country. By mid 1994 Equus y Resonancias by Juan Reyes are the first computer music compositions to be used on the stage by a Colombian drama and theater company. These pieces were continuously performed for more than a month.

Electro-acoustic techniques used up to these days by Colombian composers include, tape manipulation techniques. Wave distortion techniques like amplitude modulation, ring modulation, and frequency modulation. Filtering and subtractive synthesis. Additive synthesis by using tape techniques. Live electronics with real time digital signal processing and tape processing. Computer music technologies like digital synthesis, phase vocoder, filtering, and environment simulation. And also algorithmic composition. The reasons for a Colombian to pursue a career in electro-acoustically methods of compositions in these days abound. This music offers unorthodox compositional techniques which might be adapted to the way composers work in Colombia. Musical heritage in Latin America can be researched by using mere sound characteristics and sound production techniques, therefore avoiding tonality as the basic compositional tool. Composers who are not trained in the traditional conservatory or western way of thinking, can still create music of some significance provided by the rules of an aesthetic native style.
