TrueType fonts are basically Windows fonts, and they greatly improve Web browser text display, in my opinion. Red Hat's font server already supports them (unlike native X Windows), but in release 6.1, you have to edit /etc/X11/fs/config to install them. I think everything is automatic as of release 6.2, but I haven't checked closely. Search the Red Hat website for 'truetype' for details.
I use the GNOME desktop environment and the sawfish window manager under GNOME simply because they are the defaults in the RedHat Linux distribution. I have no major complaints about either, relative to other window managers/environments under X windows.
