"Living Documents" on the Web

Documents on this website described as "living documents" are maintained according to the following rules:

Page updates are intended only to correct errata, add or correct hypertext links, expand the material, and otherwise enhance the content in a manner consistent with the original scope (as defined by the page title).

When a section title changes, its root HTML filename may change. If this happens, a symbolic link is installed which points from the old name to the new name. As a result, the section starting page may be referred to by any name it has had in the past. Please report any broken links you find to jos at CCRMA so they can be repaired.

Living documents are frequently recompiled from LaTeX source, resulting in an automatic update of the copyright date at the bottom of each HTML page, even if there were no changes to that page. A typical reason for recompiling between major updates is to fix minor errata and broken hypertext links.

Online books have a specific edition date that is updated each time there is a new printing of the hardcopy version. Between printings, the Web version evolves forward sporadically according the rules above. If the book is considered to be unfinished, the edition date is instead a draft version date (which is also updated each printing). For citations, the edition/draft date can be treated as part of the book title, or omitted, while the last-compilation date (copyright date at the bottom of each page) should be treated as the official date of online publication. Some advise, however, that one should use instead the date that the document was found on the Web, when citing a Web document.

Copying

Electronic copies of the entire HTML document, or its individual pages, may be freely made for on-line, non-commercial usages (e.g., to maximize local access speed, guarantee future availability in exactly the current form, and the like). In such copies, relative URLs pointing outside the current document should be converted to absolute URLs. Other changes may be made only with the permission of the author(s). Please do not remove the existing absolute links at the bottom of each HTML page which point back to the original location of the document on the Web.
