Thawed Experiment

Inspiration and Creation

Thawed Experiment is a hybrid audio-visual performance system built with Chuck and Processing. The composition is focused on sonification of glacial movements and is intended to prompt questions about global climate change and the role humans are playing in it. Sounds are generated using granular synthesis, accompanied by live sounds from a hydrophone frozen in a block of ice. Chuck code is adapted from the homework three granular synthesis starter code, as well as the LiSa live granular example code (Dan Trueman, 2007). The source sound is an original electronic track I composed around the time I had the idea for this piece. During the performance, I have selected the most appropriate sections for the accompanying visuals. The video accompaniment is done using processing, which receives OSC messages from Chuck with information on when to start, stop, and what videos to play back. The live sound component is from the Chuck LiSa examples which is modeled after the munger~ from PeRColate. It uses a simple granulating algorithm to repeat a fixed number of samples captured in real time.
