Windy Hill Open Space Preserve is a regional park located in San Mateo County, California. During 2007 autumn break, Nick and I had nothing to do on Christmas Eve, we decided to go windy hill for hiking. There is a beautiful place, the forest scene changes gradually with different paths and heights. On the top of the windy hill, we can overview all the bay area and Stanford campus, all the wide view and fierce wind came from all directions. We can felt and heard windy sound all around us, it was a special experience to me, all nature sound mixed and spatialized, we walked around the circle of path, and also like walked around a music garden.
INSPIRATION:
The music idea is to create a spatial atmosphere of my own experience, windy sound created both by tape and live flute, all interactive effects are like the echo of the mountain, and all the sounds are spatialized into 8 channels. The panning is designed to present like a big “circle of stereo” instead of moving the sound rapidly between different speakers. I use some samples of pre-recorded Chinese Gu-Zheng and flute sound clip from Takemitsu’s piece “Voice”. Between or inside the sound, I want to transform or mixed the different quality of sounds gradually in the process of time.
IDEA:
