American Memory

Early Motion Pictures
from the Library of Congress, 1897-1916. These films represent the
first chapter in the history of the medium. Included are scenes of
President McKinley, the Pan-American Exposition, New York City, and San
Francisco. The films are in AVI format and may be downloaded for local
display using the Indeo codec. Most are actuality films with a running
time of two or three minutes.

The Nation's Forum:
Early Sound Recordings
of America's Leaders, 1918-1920. Fifty-nine sound
recordings of speeches focusing on issues and events surrounding the
First World War and the subsequent presidential election of 1920.

- Civil War encampments, battlefields, and protraits as captures by
Mathew Brady and his Staff of photographers.

Carl Van Vechten Photographs
- Portraits of literary figures, artists, and celebrities.

Color Photographs
from the Farm Security Admistration/Office of War
Information, ca. 1938-1944. Photographs of rural and small town
America during the late 1930s and scenes of the defense and war
mobilization effort from 1939-1944.

Documents from the Folklore Project,
Federal Writers' Project, 1936 - 1940. These life histories were
written for the WPA Federal Writers' Project between 1936 and 1940. The
collection includes 2,900 documents representing the work of over 300
writers from 24 states.

First Russian electronic photogallery HOT PICTURES presents the works
of artists who use photography. The spectre of presented works is
rather wide -- starting from "direct, immediate photography" to
computer-processed images. Also the exhibition has the works
documenting creative activity, scenes, the works which use photo images
as a base for painting, etc. The age of artists varies from 20 to 56
years, their popularity also widely varies.
