Network Music Performance
- Quarantine Sessions
A series of weekly international concerts has been held online during the pandemic and is still continuing as of this writing. The excerpt being played is from #52 and indulges the musicians' permission to appear another time. The Quarantine Sessions take place over uncompressed audio circuits and have been a source of musical connection that's keeping things alive and thriving for the participants. The archive stretches from March, 2020 to July, 2021. It serves up memories of extraordinary times and celebrates the series as a "people fest" which has been in stark contrast to the isolation experienced during the lockdowns. Acknowledgements which are due are far too many to list here, but organizing of guests, real-time mastering, streaming, soundstage and video production are contributions by core colleagues Constantin Basica, Henrik von Coler, Fernando Lopez-Lezcano, Juan Parra and Klaus Scheuermann.

When Philippe Tortell, a Professor of Oceanography at U British Columbia, got in touch in 2016 he wanted to know if it's possible to hear a new climate "quantum state." He suggested a long-time-span data sonification project with ice core records as one data source.
A group of graduate students at UC Berkeley approached me with the same interest. They'd been assigned to work with non-academic partners, in their case KQED Science, and were interested "to develop a ~6 to 7 minute radio program to help viewers 'see' the causes and impacts of climate change through music." Their project focused squarely on the recent "blip." And as one commented during our work together, "When you sonify data, you experience time in a way you can’t when you look at a chart."
The rhythms you'll hear explore irregular patterns in the temperature record.

- The Metered Tide 100 years
Greg Niemeyer suggests a location test for a sonification music video. The site is Crissy Field, Golden Gate National Recreation Area at the upper tip of San Francisco next door to the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge. The data set is 100 years of tidal records acquired by the gauge on the shore adjacent to where we record. Greg brings video / audio crew, I bring celletto, mobile phone and earbuds. We make 7 takes and depart.
I then flew to British Columbia laptop in lap and worried “how will I ever do the post-production” of this completely fun but quick session while going onward with other projects. A ”light bulb” went on while on the plane (as sometimes does at altitude). I wrote a chuck script while seat belted in place that makes the audio mix automatically and follows the original tidal data. I sent the edit decision list to Greg and his video edits followed suit.
The sonification signal I was improvising with was created algorithmically from the tidal data and played back in one ear while the electronic cello (celletto) sounded in my other ear. A number of El Nino and other extreme events in the record are audible against a background of ever-rising sea level.

Tomato Music is a 15-channel work compressing 10 days of the gallery ripening into 10 minutes in the concert hall.
The instrument is a physical model inspired by the ancient Roman hydraulis.

Greg created the video first. I was working on a synthesis technique (FM vocal singing) at that time and we put the two together. It was a project for NIME 2017 in Copenhagen that included a flute recital in a church. The synthesis comes from analysis of a sung part in a Kyrie taken to it's formants. The opening flute music is often playing on a formant or in counterpart with the formants. Lots of time and frequency warping going on. The sun video is Greg's compilation from years of pictures compiled by the NASA solar observatory. Frame differencing drives the accompanying sonification of that part of the piece.
