Trumpeting-place, Temple mount, Jerusalem

Inscription from 1st century CE. Discovered in 1968 by Mazar et al in excavations of the southern wall of the temple mount in Jerusalem. The inscription reads ‘to the place of trumpeting’ with subsequent word cut off but likely ‘to distinguish’ (between sacred and profane). The corner in which the trumpeter would blow faces a reverberant wadi.
