LabLife

LabLife is what you get out of it. For some, it may be a very familiar space reminiscent of getting your feet wet (or more accurately thrown into the deep end) during a first wet lab experience. For others, it'll be a great way to wreck havoc and encourage chaos, and be rewarded for it. And to the rest, it makes no sense whatsoever. However, the real question is does it matter? And for who does it matter?

CellLife Project (Mac OS)

Milestone 3

I wanted to focus more on the growth of the sound space and how each component builds up. This includes the creation of the cells and each of the petri dishes of the wall. I also set up a system that spatializes the sounds so that traveling in the space brings about different interaction of sounds and perspectives. The future idea is to spawn a different scale on each of the petri dishes so the position you stand at creates an unique polyphony. I also want to give the cells that spawn more life by having them move around and then create each petri dish on the wall one at a time.

Milestone 2

This milestone I wanted to get the setting and some of the equipment in place. For the sound, I ended up going with the number of blocks that appear on the petri dish and I want to expand on that further. Also realized that I want to make a lot of different objects interactable, however this turned out to be difficult using multiple buttons specific to each object. Hoping to get the petri dish working and have a more random distribution. Might add azoom in on that and then maybe have multiple petri dishes appear with different parameters.

Milestone 1

Wet Lab:

Ever cultivate E. Coli in a lab before? It can be an interesting experience where each step affects how well the cells grow. In this project, each of the steps determine the outcome of the sound. The steps would include pipetting E.coli onto a Petri dish through LB broth, determining the location of the liquid on the plate, putting the E. Coli in incubator setting the temperature, seeing how the cells grow on the dish, picking colonies from the dish. I would like to simulate as much as possible the steps taken to get to colonies which would each have parameters set bye each of the steps. Pipetting can determine how many cells will form, which can be the number of voices based on the mL amount. Raking around and spreading can determine the location of panning and also the location of formation visually. Selecting the colony will determine which voices in the cells are heard. One idea is having a chitter chatter between the cells, some type of conversation that is not distinguishable but sounds like talking amongst the cells. Timing these in a way pitched up and down, maybe having a way to have different kind of chatters that can be generated based on the cell colonies.

Signals

Body Percussion instrument that uses biological signals as a source. I would imagine using EEG, EKG, Respiration, even blood pressure levels. EEG would be something that is in the headvoice, maybe higher in pitch and reverb in a large room. The heart beat from the EEG could be the bass rhythm and have some lower frequency sound content. Respiration can be airy sounds and turning speech into music. Pitch could be data sonified, I could use actual measurements as the data points and even have some type of mic input to represent the respiration. Instead of repenting the system as the human body, maybe it could be a network of some sort, a metaphor in nature that is interconnected enough but still recognizable as embodying a body.

Joy Ride

Going out on a joy ride has always been one of my greatest blisses. There’s something about being on the road with your thoughts and being able to see so much at one time that make me really reflective. I want to enable the player to upload any wave file of their choosing. From the wave file, I will extract signal information such as the centroid, envelope, fft, intensity and the total number of samples. The intensity of the song will determine the height of the road moving in the y direction. The envelope will determine how winding the path is. The centroid will set the color or the background as the car drives into the distance. The player will have the ability to maneuver the car left to right that will affect panning. Acceleration will change the bpm of the song. There will be a function to roll down the windows for almost an EQ effect. Next to the car will be a lake reflecting the image go the car. I can also see there being a night and day mode that can also be another setting. I want this to be a medium of exploring your favorite music as joy rides for me are also a time to enjoy music and reflect.
