Having spent the break with my family, I was constantly surrounded by the sound of my mother whether it was her bubbling, stomping, cleaning, but most notably playing her guzheng. I will forever have the sound of a guzheng linked in my head to my mom. With this in mind, I decided to design a sound logo for my mom called Gloria, her English name. I wanted something that sounded a lot like the guzheng, which led me to primarily using Chuck’s StifKarp unit generator to have that plucked string sound. For the narrative, I wanted to convey her noisiness and chaos, as she can somehow make a simple sentiment use a thousand words and is one of the most unintentionally chaotic people I know. I also wanted to take advantage of the fact that this sound logo is being written in code, which the simplest way to do that in my mind is to incorporate randomness. This section also has a low pass filter that slowly opens up and allows more frequencies. However, I wanted the sound logo to have a conclusion as well, plus when my mom is playing the guzheng it’s usually the most peaceful the Fan household can ever get. So after a chaotic and random introduction, it proceeds into a simple and pleasant instrumental tune with a classic musical conclusion.
