From this week's reading, I’d like to respond to Principle 2.6, which states: "Technology Should Create Calm".

Ge Wang introduces the idea of technology creating calm through innovative designs, using the example of the “Ocarina” as a key demonstration of this principle. The Ocarina, a digital musical instrument that turns a smartphone into a wind instrument, was the first time I encountered a technology-driven instrument that blends both digital and physical interaction. It struck me as a unique combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, beautifully encapsulating how technology can be used to create calm and meaningful experiences.

What fascinated me most was how the Ocarina transforms the ordinary smartphone into something more soulful. The sound it produces is soft and serene, fostering a sense of peace. The playing method, which involves blowing into the microphone and touching virtual holes on the screen, mimics a real ocarina, offering a tactile experience that feels natural and engaging. This mix of simple design and beautiful sound contributes to a calming interaction, showing how technology can transcend mere utility to evoke emotional responses.

The Ocarina is a perfect example of how technology, when used creatively, can introduce beauty and tranquility into everyday experiences. It aligns with the idea that technology doesn’t have to be loud or attention-seeking; instead, it can be a tool that quietly enhances our lives. This invention opened my eyes to the potential for technology to not only provide functionality but also to create moments of calm and delight in a busy world.

Sometimes, music has the power to heal the heart. When I feel anxious or angry, I often go jogging with my headphones, playing my favorite songs. As I run through the campus, the combination of the beautiful scenery and the music helps me find a sense of calm. The rhythm of the music syncs with my thoughts, allowing them to flow freely. This process not only brings me peace but also helps me reflect on my emotions. In these moments, music becomes more than just a background—it helps me heal, offering clarity and comfort that lifts my spirits and eases my feelings. In this way, technology—through music—truly embodies the principle that it should create calm and enhance our emotional well-being.

By the way, one of my favorite songwriters in Taiwan is Guolun Zhang. I’ve had the privilege of attending several of his music sharing sessions, where he talks about his personal life stories alongside his songs. These experiences have been incredibly moving and inspiring, as his heartfelt storytelling and beautiful compositions create a deep emotional connection. Hearing him speak and perform has been amazing, leaving a lasting impact on how I appreciate both his music and his journey.
