The SPRAWL system is an audio and information routing network developed at the Technical University of Berlin allowing enhanced ways of interaction for musical ensembles. The workshop ensemble "access points" are stations which connect to a common ambisonic audio server implemented in SuperCollider. Ensemble members each perform using their individual jacktrip-connected ethernet access points which consist of a Raspberry Pi 4 with 7 inch touch screen and audio interface. Students should plan to bring an instrument to plug in to their access point (acoustic, electronic or vocal mic).
The workshop focuses on technical aspects including the hardware and design and programming of software for the system. Existing and new musical compositions will be explored. Operation of bidirectional, uncompressed real-time audio streaming using jacktrip will be covered. Students should be able to clone the entire ensemble system "back home."
SuperCollider, Puredata, Python and jacktrip are installed on the access points for creating custom control and processing software. Dedicated software configurations will be developed for specific compositions and improvisational approaches.
