Certainly one of the most important is learning the relationship between sounds. Some of this learning is certainly driven by attention and a desire to learn and understand about auditory signals. But are there also components of learning about the auditory world that work at an unconscious level? I&rsquo;m guessing there are, but how does one separate out the conscious from the unconscious processes of learning about our auditory world? Can we design experiments that show a difference?<br /><div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-cost"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> FREE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-intended-audience"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Open to the Public </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="https://ccrma.stanford.edu/events/lauren-sculthorpe-petle-starkey-auditory-system-learns-rules-without-awareness" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Thu, 13 Apr 2017 00:36:29 +0000 malcolm 4456 at https://ccrma.stanford.edu On Structure + Bryan Jacobs https://ccrma.stanford.edu/events/structure-bryan-jacobs <div class="field field-type-date field-field-event-date"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Date:&nbsp;</div> <span class="date-display-single">Thu, 05/18/2017 - <span class="date-display-start">7:30pm</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">9:00pm</span></span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-location"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Location:&nbsp;</div> CCRMA Stage </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Event Type:&nbsp;</div> Concert </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="200" height="180" alt="" src="https://ccrma.stanford.edu/sites/default/files/user/ecallery/onstructuregoat_small.jpg?1491937656" /> </div> </div> </div> Join us for a multimedia, robotic, and generally chaotic doubleheader concert with artists <em>Bryan Jacobs</em> and <em>On Structure</em>.<em><br /></em><div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-cost"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> FREE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-intended-audience"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Open to the Public </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="https://ccrma.stanford.edu/events/structure-bryan-jacobs" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Tue, 11 Apr 2017 19:12:59 +0000 ecallery 4452 at https://ccrma.stanford.edu Bryan Jacobs - Mechanical Instruments and ... https://ccrma.stanford.edu/events/bryan-jacobs-mechanical-instruments-and <div class="field field-type-date field-field-event-date"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Date:&nbsp;</div> <span class="date-display-single">Wed, 05/17/2017 - <span class="date-display-start">5:30pm</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">6:30pm</span></span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-location"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Location:&nbsp;</div> CCRMA Classroom </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Event Type:&nbsp;</div> Colloquium </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="200" height="111" alt="" src="https://ccrma.stanford.edu/sites/default/files/user/ecallery/flute-front3.jpg?1494891850" /> </div> </div> </div> Recent Guggenheim Fellow - composer, performer, and sound artist - Bryan Jacobs, presents this weeks CCRMA Colloquium on his recent work and research. Bryan's work focuses on interactions between live performers and electronic sound. His pieces are often theatrical in nature, pitting blabber-mouthed fanciful showoffs against timid reluctants. The sounds are playfully organized and many times mimic patterns found in human dialogue. Hand-build electromechanical instruments controlled by microcontrollers bridge acoustic and electroacoustic sound worlds. These instruments live dual lives as time-based concert works and non-time-based gallery works. <br /><div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-cost"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> FREE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-intended-audience"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Open to the Public </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="https://ccrma.stanford.edu/events/bryan-jacobs-mechanical-instruments-and" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Mon, 15 May 2017 23:46:28 +0000 ecallery 4474 at https://ccrma.stanford.edu Lee Miller (UCDavis) - Hearing Loss and Neurotechnology: New Approaches to Improve Speech Perception https://ccrma.stanford.edu/events/lee-miller-ucdavis-hearing-loss-and-neurotechnology-new-approaches-improve-speech-perception <div class="field field-type-date field-field-event-date"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Date:&nbsp;</div> <span class="date-display-single">Fri, 05/12/2017 - <span class="date-display-start">10:30am</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">12:00pm</span></span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-location"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Location:&nbsp;</div> CCRMA Seminar Room </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Event Type:&nbsp;</div> Hearing Seminar </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="150" height="200" alt="" src="https://ccrma.stanford.edu/sites/default/files/user/malcolm/millerlee14246.jpg?1492044125" /> </div> </div> </div> Without a doubt, the holy grail of hearing research is helping people (and machines) navigate our noisy world.
