Like the organ part in Bob Dylan&rsquo;s Like a Rolling Stone or the Keith Richard&rsquo;s often repeated 8 note guitar riff in the Rolling Stones (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. Motifs in classical music take a similar role. They become the passage which gets repeated, transposed, reversed, and modified throughout the piece.<br /><div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-cost"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> FREE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-intended-audience"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Open to the Public </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="https://cm-wiki.stanford.edu/events/les-atlas-u-washington-motif-discovery" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Wed, 26 Sep 2018 23:49:06 +0000 malcolm 4732 at https://cm-wiki.stanford.edu BEAM SPLITTER https://cm-wiki.stanford.edu/events/beam-splitter <div class="field field-type-date field-field-event-date"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Date:&nbsp;</div> <span class="date-display-single">Thu, 12/06/2018 - <span class="date-display-start">7:30pm</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">8:30pm</span></span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-location"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Location:&nbsp;</div> CCRMA Stage </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Event Type:&nbsp;</div> Concert </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="200" height="170" alt="" src="https://cm-wiki.stanford.edu/sites/default/files/user/cobasica/beam_splitter_press18_photo_by_iven_chen-van_dyk.jpg?1537846765" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>BEAM SPLITTER is a duo for amplified voice, trombone and occasional analog electronics. Utilizing the pure sounds of acoustic and closely amplified sound sources, the duo joins together two individual voices into a distinct dialog that delves beyond the borders of the corporeal elements of extended technique and sound. There is an intimacy and conflict that becomes evident as the two personas intertwine, in moments joining together seamlessly and in the next, being left with the feeling of irrevocable fracture. The two manage between these extremes with a kind of improvised grace that reveals an effort towards a common goal.</p><div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-cost"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> FREE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-intended-audience"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Open to the Public </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="https://cm-wiki.stanford.edu/events/beam-splitter" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Tue, 25 Sep 2018 03:41:01 +0000 cobasica 4723 at https://cm-wiki.stanford.edu Torsten Dau on Using data-driven auditory profiling to scene-aware signal processing for super-human hearing https://cm-wiki.stanford.edu/events/torsten-dau-using-data-driven-auditory-profiling-scene-aware-signal-processing-super-human-he <div class="field field-type-date field-field-event-date"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Date:&nbsp;</div> <span class="date-display-single">Thu, 11/29/2018 - <span class="date-display-start">10:00am</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">11:30am</span></span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-location"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Location:&nbsp;</div> Seminar Room at the Knoll </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Event Type:&nbsp;</div> Hearing Seminar </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="200" height="152" alt="" src="https://cm-wiki.stanford.edu/sites/default/files/user/malcolm/torsten-dau-i-horelsen-photo-joachim-rode-web.jpg?1543261999" /> </div> </div> </div> Note, change in plans.&nbsp; Torsten Dau will be speaking Thursday at 10AM. One of the hardest problems is synthesizing the correct audio, without requiring users to get their head-related transfer functions (HRTF) measured. Nobody wants to sit in a jig and while their ears are probed, and this solution really doesn&rsquo;t scale.<br /> <br /> At this week&rsquo;s CCRMA Hearing Seminar, Helene Bahu and David Romblom from Dysonics in SF will be talking about their methods to estimate HRTFs from simple physical measurements. This is a nice contrast to last Friday&rsquo;s talk where Brian Malone talked about auditory neurons that performed *better* in the presence of noise. <br /> <br /> But overall our ears are not so lucky. Noise and competing sounds mask the sound we want to understand, and our own limitations further degrade the experience.
