Firstly, a simple finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) scheme is introduced for linear 2D plates, accompanied by the acceleration strategy for its C/C++ implementation utilizing the CPU's single-instruction-multiple-data (SIMD) instructions. Subsequently, the computational bottlenecks of nonlinear plate simulation modeled by the von Karman equation, are addressed, along with corresponding accelerated numerical schemes employing fast linear system solutions and the invariant energy quadratization technique. Finally, the results are demonstrated through the real-time synthesis of a gong-like sound.<div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-cost"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> FREE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-intended-audience"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Open to the Public </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="https://ccrma.stanford.edu/events/real-time-sound-synthesis-2-d-plates-using-fdtd-methods" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Thu, 25 May 2023 18:03:49 +0000 jos 6555 at https://ccrma.stanford.edu Music and the Brain 2023: Aural Architecture – Sound, Space, and Spirituality https://ccrma.stanford.edu/events/music-and-brain-2023-aural-architecture-sound-space-and-spirituality <div class="field field-type-date field-field-event-date"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Date:&nbsp;</div> <span class="date-display-single">Tue, 05/30/2023 - <span class="date-display-start">1:00pm</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">4:00pm</span></span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-location"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Location:&nbsp;</div> CCRMA Stage </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Event Type:&nbsp;</div> Other </div> </div> </div> Join us for an afternoon of talks examining how the acoustics of ritual and sacred spaces affect our experiences. It's quite magical. The fastest moving cells in the body transduce nanometers of motion into electrical stimuli that our brain can turn into speech or music. Did I mention the feedback that lets us here over many, many orders of magnitude? To make matters more interesting it&rsquo;s a dynamic system with plenty of feedback, ensuring that there are many problems to solve. And all of our auditory experiences start here.
