Somewhere I found a fretless bass soundfont a while back. It had bugs; the top (127) velocity layer had harmonics instead of bass, which was annoying as hell. I fired up swami and yanked that crap out of there, extended the top velocity curve up to the top, and all is well. I use it all the time and occasionally impress bass players with it.
As for acoustic or electric guitar, I've never heard a convincing guitar sample. Nor a convincing "slap and pop" style bass-- they all end up sounding like SoundCanvas'es or the Seinfeld theme to me. Maybe there are gigasamples nowadays that can do it.
