PhoneZone is musical commentary on the effect of the integration of mobile phones into our everyday lives. While this technology has no doubt provided benefits, it has also come at a cost: our connection with the 'real world' has been somewhat eroded by the endless stream of notifications calling (ha) us into the digital world.

The form of the piece will be ternary, with the opening offering a feeling of excitement over the new connection to the digital realm followed by a darker section characterized by the zombie-like actions of phone addicts. The final section hopes to reconcile those two extremes into a compromise.

The piece will be composed entirely of sounds emitted by phones:

  1. ringtones
  2. vibrations
  3. voices
  4. app notification sounds
  5. alarms

I am still in the process of exploring software to do the spatialization, but I am leaning toward Spat. This composition serves not only as a creative outlet, but as a method to figure out what types of software exist for this type of composition, what their pros and cons are, with the idea that I could create something a bit more intuitive to use in the future.
