Rob Bullen is an acoustician who has been working at CCRMA for six months on a “sound source separation” project. The idea is that this would provide a method of field recording that will allow the recorded sound to be used in a musical context, by separating out individual sounds for processing, re-positioning, etc. At present, “Sonic Distillery” is a prototype with 14 tiny microphones and other odd-looking pieces, and some array processing software. Rob will describe how it works and give some demonstrations, including a short piece constructed from sound recorded around CCRMA.
