Ettu (2008)
video
music by GDSS (Gabriel Dunne + Stephanie Sherriff)
In 2008, shortly after moving to the Bay Area, Sherriff purchased her first laptop computer, which unknowingly catalyzed an ever-evolving relationship with sound and moving imagery. Ettu is one of her earliest video works that utilizes tiny spy cameras to record video, and also features original music from her first collaborative electroacoustic music project, GDSS. In its simplicity, cobbled together fragments of time in an endless loop results in a hypnotic examination of synchronicity between visual and aural rhythms. These new beginnings in audiovisual processes and experimentation with computer technology are a mainstay in Sherriff’s art practice and exemplify her fascination with time-based media and its ability to function as malleable material despite its ephemeral nature.
