A trend has been underway for some time, especially in some forms of music, away from earlier models of works that are fixed and completed and towards participatory situations designed to be actively explored by performers and audiences.
Some related issues will be explored in this talk. For instance, the seeking of “sweet spots” in the spectrum from spontaneous improvisation on the one extreme and fixed notated music on the other. Also the emergence in the past half-century of sound and multimedia installations as an alternative to concert performances.
A part of this discussion will relate also to the explosive advance of technology, which has brought sophisticated software, advanced real-world sensors, the internet and new physical materials into artists’ tool palettes.
