Clocked Out Trio

Erik Griswold - Keyboards
Vanessa Tomlinson - Percussion
Harry Castle - Electronics

The Clocked Out Trio plays an eclectic blend of the spot-composed, the un-composed, and the through-composed, their style hovering between experimental jazz and classical sources. In their performances fast-paced and conversational collective improvisations give way to meditative or hypnotic centerpieces. There is a fluid ebb and flow of musical ideas, as phrases spill from one sound source to another.

Griswold stands at the catalytic center as experienced composer and improviser with an uncanny ability to blend the two seamlessly. Castle comes from the improvisational extreme with an ability to create situations that allow performers to interact freely. Tomlinson extends her virtuosic mastery of percussion into the realm of improvisation with a dynamism that electrifies the trio.

Using his innovative software "Pengstrument," Castle acts as an equal contrapuntal voice in the trio, while at the same time using live computer processing to enhance and shape the acoustic sounds of Vanessa's mixed-percussion array and Erik's traditional or prepared piano.

The Clocked-Out Trio have performed and lectured throughout the U.S. and Australia, and in October 1999 participated as artists in residence at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in Cheng Du, China. Recent performances include Gus Lucky's in Minneapolis and the Empty Bottle in Chicago. Other performance venues have included The Planet in Melbourne, PATU in Adelaide, Spruce Street Forum in San Diego, Center for Research in the Computing Arts in San Diego and various venues in Sichuan Province, China.
