Music 250a Lab Kits

All students taking Music 250a at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics get their own lab kit. For this very special year (Covid-19), the content of kits was significantly upgraded to allow students to carry out labs from home.

This page gives an overview of the content of the kit provided to students in Music 250a along with some information (including safety guidelines) related to each element.

Soldering Iron Kit

• Important Safety Information: Soldering irons pose three primary concerns: production of soldering waste, emission of rosin fumes, and burn/fire hazard.
  • Waste
    • Use lead-free solder wherever possible.
    • Students should collect solder waste as “electronic waste” and follow local ordinances on its disposal.
  • Rosin fumes
    • Students should perform soldering in an open, well-ventilated area if possible.
    • Students who are sensitive to the fumes can potentially work with a partner.
    • Students should perform no more than 15 minutes a day actively soldering (i.e., actively burning rosin).
  • Heat/fire
    • Only use soldering irons that include a holder and “cage.” Students should always return the iron to the holder when not in active use, and turn off the iron if they are done using it.
  • Other controls
    • Students will be required to take Steve Clark’s soldering safety training.
    • During lab periods, Doug (TA) will be available via Zoom to discuss any questions students have.
    • At the end of session, students will be required to “check out” with Doug, which will include verifying that the iron is off. This will be considered part of the lab assignment.
