Homework

Homework 1 - Due on Oct. 6, 2014

1) Create some sort of musical patch that you wouldn’t mind playing with for 2 hours. You will need to show this to me at the beginning of Mondays lab. In Mondays lab, we will be hooking up commercial controllers to your patches and playing with them to see what works and what doesn’t. If you have some patches that you enjoy working with, this will be very enjoyable. If you don’t like your patches, this could become very tedious. Here are some hints about how find some things that work for you: In Max, if you go to Extras -> Examples overview. Click on the various tabs and see if you can find some pre made patches that fit your musical aesthetic. Also in Max, under the Help menu, at the bottom, you will see: Max Tutorials - this is where you can review the various types of items such as bangs, toggles, objects, messages, and number boxes. MSP Tutorials - this is where you will find some basic synthesis and sound design tools Jitter Tutorials - this is where you will find the visualization portion of Max which we aren’t going to cover in class but which you are more than welcome to use in your projects.

2) Draw an example of a button (discrete input) and a handle (continuous input) that you use in your daily life. Write a couple of sentences on your sheets about what you like or don’t like about your examples.

Download the arduino software onto your laptop. That part is due on Oct. 8, 2014.
