    HOMEWORK #3

Due Monday, October 21 before class

    Reading

    1. Discussion

      • As a player of a traditional acoustic instrument, which of the following required the most time and effore to learn?
        1. Producing the right sequence of pitches
        2. Getting sounds to start and end at the right times
        3. Controlling the dynamics (loudness) expressively
        4. Controlling timbre expressively
      • When you play your instrument now, which do you find hardest to get "right"?
      • Be prepared to discuss these questions in class.
      • If you don't play an instrument, try to come up with another skill that you think may be comparable and be able to describe your experience learning that skill.
    2. Project Idea

Bring a sketch to class of an idea you have for a project.
Things to think about in your sketch:
      • Who is the user and how does he/she use your device?
      • What are the inputs and outputs of the device? - if it makes music, how will it sound?
      • In what context will it be used?
      • What is the metaphor?
