Reading

Read secion 3.1 of All you need to know about EE ( ps , pdf ). (Note that the .ps will probably look better. To open it, right click and save the file to your directory. Then use gv allee.ps to look at a postscript file in linux, or lpr allee.ps to send it to the printer.) This will tell how to compute the equivalent resistance of resistors connected in series and in parallel.

When you come to class, bring a calculator and some paper. We will start by doing some exercises where you will compute equivalent resistances. We will then talk about how to use resistors to condition signals form sensors.

In the lab wednesday and thursday, you will plug together some resistor networks, measure the resulting resistances with a multimeter, put input signals to the networks with a signal generator and look at the various signals with an oscilloscope. The lab will introduce you to using a multimeter, a signal generator, and an oscilloscope. Optionally, you may solder together a resistor network and get some experience with a soldering iron.

Extra / Optional

Read Chapters 2 and 4 of Geoff Martin's Online Audio Electronics Textbook. This may be helpful if you don't have any background in electronics.
