Students may raise their final grades by as much as 15% by completing extra-credit projects from the list below.
All extra credit is due by the last day of class (Wednesday, 3/15/17).
- [Chapter 3] Read the article on outdoor sound propagation in the Civil War and write up a report.
- [Chapter 4] Make graphs of amplitude and phase vs. frequency for the Driven Harmonic Motion Analyzer. Use two different values of damping.
- [Chapter 5] Determine the speed of sound in the bumpy hose by multiplying frequency times wavelength for several harmonics.
- [Chapter 9] Read the chapter and answer the questions for Exercises 1-9 on p. 190 of the text.
- [Chapter 12] A challenging extra credit project would be to build an impedance head and to measure the impedance of one or more wind instruments.
Professor Peter Hoekje conducted such a workshop at CCRMA in 2006, and we have copies of the instructions he wrote for this workshop. As a sound source, this design uses a piezoelectric buzzer disk, which has a high acoustical impedance, and therefore provides a nearly constant acoustic flow. A small electrical microphone then senses the pressure at the input, and this will then be proportional to the input impedance.
