Explore the resonances of two- and three-piece cylindrical segment models using the Matlab script ntubes.m
and compare with vocal tract shapes and formants as described on pgs. 322-323 of Rossing (you'll need the script reflpoly.m
as well).
Explore formant tuning with the aid of a realtime spectrum analyzer. Try some of the techniques used by Tuvan singers.
Record the ``impulse response'' of the CCRMA ballroom. Calculate the resonances for a rectangular room of roughly the same dimensions as the ballroom and compare with the measured response.
Repeat the ballroom measurement with the microphone at a different location and compare with the previous results.
Use a sine-tone generator to ``excite'' frequencies which match the peaks in the measured ballroom response. Compare the sound quality when the generator is set to frequencies which are not present in the recorded response. Walk around the room and try to locate pressure nodes.
