Linux / NEXTSTEP @ ccrma

Many of the PC's here at CCRMA boot more than one operating system. Here are the details on how to exit graciously from one of them and arrive safely to the other...

* Rebooting: the short recipe

Read on for more details...

* Want to be a model CCRMA denizen?

The nicest thing you can do is to login into the currently running operating system and make sure no one is using the machine remotely before rebooting (by typing finger in a terminal, for example). Of course you can just go ahead and reboot without checking, but sooner or latter it will happen to you that you are logged in remotely and the connection dissapears without warning...

* Booting a PC from NextStep into Linux

After you made sure nobody is using the computer remotely simultaneously press the <RIGHT ALT> key and the <NUMLOCK> key. That will bring up the small NMI interrupt panel. Type <r> to restart the machine. After the BIOS finishes its startup sequence the display will clear and you will see the name "LILO" appearing in the empty screen (LILO is the Linux bootstrap loader). You have 5 seconds to type "linux" followed by <ENTER>.

* Booting a PC from Linux into NextStep

There is at present no elegant way that I know off of rebooting Linux while you are logged in... So the first step is to logout. Then restart the X windows server by pressing simultaneously <LEFT CONTROL>, <LEFT ALT> and <BACKSPACE>. The xdm login window will dissapear, and as soon as that happens press simultaneously <LEFT CONTROL>, <LEFT ALT> and <DEL> (in the numeric keypad). After the BIOS finishes its startup sequence the display will clear and you will see the name "LILO" appearing in the empty screen (LILO is the Linux bootstrap loader). You have 5 seconds to type "next" followed by <ENTER>.
