Music 220a - Homework 1: Data Sonification

Chuck Files / Data Files

For my project I used three data sets: The precipitation levels of Manzini/Matsapa Airport in Swaziland The max temperature in Manzini/Matsapa Airport in Swaziland The min temperature in Manzini/Matsapa Airport in Swaziland

For the temperature datasets, I set one to a Triangle Oscillator and the other to a Square both at much lower amplitude than the precipitation solo. I set the precipitation levels as a Sin Oscillator at a higher frequency and higher amplitude. I passed each oscillator through a different filter based upon their parts (lead through a high pass and polyphonic voices through a low pass). With all of these effects the temperature curves dominate with sparse stabs by the precipitation curve depicting the lack of water that Swaziland has been experiencing during this 2011-2014 time period. I called the song “Our Chickens Are Nice – But Naughty!” because when I looked up “Swaziland 2011 drought” one of the first links had a mention in the preview of “Our chickens are nice – but naughty!”
