Homework 5 for MUSIC 220a
This is the homework submission for homework 5 by Thomas Walther.
The Score
Here is my score of the randomly chosen sound file "nature12.wav":
Creating the Parts
I recorded both freestyle parts, one rhythmic and one scored part with an electric guitar. While the freestyle parts present a melody, I "scratch" the guitar in the rhythmic part and pluck it regardless of notes and pitches in the scored part. The second scored part shows wind sounds made out of white noise. The white noise volume and pitch is controlled by blowing into the microphone. The second rhythmic part was created by clapping.
Recording Chuck Files
These are the files I used to record input signals and transform them into some fancy computer sounds.
Intermediate Audio Files
This homework contains a lot of audio files. I will not link them separately, you can grab a .zip file with all the source audio files in it.
Arrangement and Binaural Mixdown
I mixed and arranged the piece in Studio One 2 and exported each track to a mono wav file. The separate files were then binaurally panned in ChucK. Here's a screenshot of the mixdown - it should give a pretty good idea of the arrangement. Due to the format of the hw5starter scripts which recorded the original signal to the left and the computer sound to the right channel, a track with an L marks an input sound track, and a R track is a computer sound track.
The ChucK script for panning and binaural mixdown is pretty straightforward:
